Rammstein Rocks Download 2016 with Pyrotechnics and Controversy

Download Festival is a British-created rock festival created by Terrance Gough, held annually at the Donington Park motorsport circuit in Leicestershire, England (since 2003); in Paris, France (since 2016); at Parramatta Park, Sydney (since 2019); Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne (since 2018) and at the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg, Germany (since 2022).

The 2003 festival tickets had a code on them, which would allow festival goers to download tracks from bands which had played. Although this idea has been dropped in subsequent years, the festival organisers have nurtured an online community through the Download Festival Forums. Initially a sounding board for the fans (and critics) of the festival, the boards have become an integral part of the festival organisation with regular contributions from festival director John Probyn and promoter Andy Copping. The forums also provide face to face feedback through the Fan Forum meetings (started in 2006) and organise the Boardie BBQ (2006 on) and the Boardie Takeover night (2009), football tournaments and a pub quiz for the R.I.P. campers who arrive on a Wednesday night.

In addition to the annual UK edition of Download Festival, it was also announced that in 2016 there would also be a Download held at the Longchamp Racecourse (French: Hippodrome de Longchamp) in Paris on the same weekend as the UK Festival. The lineup will be similar to the UK Festival, but not identical. Iron Maiden were announced as the Friday headliner on 19 October 2015, part of their The Book Of Souls Tour. Rammstein were announced as Sunday headliners on 21 October 2015.

Despite the predictions of a total wash out of Doningtons annual festivities, mother nature had been kind to Download 2016, at least until the Friday. As Team Rock Sins took to the hallowed turf there was still grass to be seen, albeit not for much longer!

First band of the day were Swedes Royal Republic (7), who opened the main stage in typically entertaining form. Some of the tracks from their latest album Weekend Man caught the ear but it was tracks such as Tommy Gun from their breakthrough debut We Are The Royal that typically received the loudest reaction. Closing with the always entertaining (and thoroughly bonkers) Full Steam Space Machine, Royal Republic definitely made themselves some new friends at Download 2016.

The German metal band, famed for their elaborate pyrotechnics, join Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden on festival line-up and will play on the Friday night of the festival. Download 2016 takes place on June 10-12, 2016 at the spiritual home of rock in Donington Park, Leicestershire.

Though the full lineup has yet to be revealed, the 2016 Download Festival in Donington Park, England is shaping up to be one of the metal events of the year. Organizers have just revealed the three headliners for the festival and they are Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Rammstein.

In case you've been living under a rock, the three headliners for Download Festival 2016 will be Rammstein (Friday), Black Sabbath (Saturday) and Iron Maiden (Sunday).

IRON MAIDEN will make a spectacular return to Download Festival on Sunday 12 June to headline the final day of Download Festival, their only UK show of 2016. The band will fly in to East Midlands Airport on their enormous Boeing 747-400 jumbo jet Ed Force One, piloted by Bruce Dickinson and carrying band, crew, stage production and equipment over 55,000 miles around the world, visiting 35 countries on The Book Of Souls World Tour.

Topping the bill on the opening night is Rammstein, Saturday headliner is Black Sabbath, and Sunday's headliner is Iron Maiden, they are the first acts confirmed for 2016. In total around 150 acts appear over five stages over the three days of the festival.

Also in honour of the late Lemmy Kilmister, the main stage will be called The Lemmy Stage this year. Certainly a fitting tribute for Lemmy at this years Download Festival 2016 at Donnington Park!

So there you have it. The headliners announced for Download 2016 and there'll be discussions galore right upto the day of who should, who shouldn't and why not headline this illustrious festival. Needless to say the deed has been done!
